Five minutes east of Red Bluff, just off Hwy 36, is where you’ll find Tehama Oaks Vineyard & Winery – Red Bluff’s one and only winery. Owned and operated by Bob and Jackie Douglas, Tehama Oaks produces high quality estate wines from its two vineyards, and superb varietal wines and blends from select vineyards in Manton and the Shenandoah Valley in Amador County.
Bob, Tehama Oaks’ winemaker, developed an interest in wines and winemaking while teaching science at Napa High School in 1966. After moving to Red Bluff in the mid-90s, Bob began making wine at home for friends and family. He enrolled in winemaking and viticulture classes, and after retiring in 2008, Bob and his family planted two small vineyards on their Red Bluff property. Tehama Oaks Vineyard & Winery officially opened in 2010.
Tehama Oaks released its first wines in May 2011, a Roussanne and a Viognier, which won gold at the Florida State Fair International Wine Competition. Inspired by its success, Bob began creating other equally impressive wines.
Today, Tehama Oaks offers an extensive list of varietals like Viognier, a lively white with flavors of ripe apricots, pineapples and tropical fruit; Syrah, a soft-on-the-palate red with notes of ripe blackberries and black currants; and Petite Sirah, an estate red with bold tannins, dense blackberry and rich oak flavors.
Blends include Tres Francais, an elegant white with tropical fruit flavors created using Viognier, Roussanne and French Colombard grapes. Red blends named in honor of Red Bluff’s rich rodeo history include Barrel Racer Red, a light, luscious blend of Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Viognier and Roussanne; Tehamador Red, a sophisticated red featuring ripe fruit and berry flavors, crafted with Syrah, Petite Sirah and Primativo grapes; and Red Rock Red – named after Red Bluff’s most famous bull – is a big, balanced blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Viognier.
From start to finish Bob is hands-on. He uses modern equipment to create limited production wines in an old world style. Friends and family happily volunteer to hand-bottle and hand-label Bob’s boutique wines, preparing them for sale online and through the Tehama Oaks wine club.
Bob and Jackie invite wine lovers to join them at their quaint winery one weekend per month to taste their latest releases and other wines like their 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2011 Petite Sirah – both silver medal winners at the 2014 Florida International Wine Competition. Guests mingle and mix beneath majestic live oaks while enjoying wine-paired hors devours lovingly created by Jackie. A bocce ball court located in the vineyard offers friendly competition between friends.
To experience Bob’s divine wines, call (530) 529-2356. Then make the short drive out Hwy 36 to Tehama Oaks Vineyard & Winery. Wine tasting is by appointment only, Wednesday through Saturday. Bob and Jackie look forward to meeting you!
