Anyone who visits Cedar Crest Vineyard & Winery in Manton can see that owners, Jim and Corey Livingston, understand that quality of service is just as important as the quality of their wines. Since 2009, Jim and Corey, along with their kids and grandkids, have been committed to producing fine wines that are just as approachable as they are, while offering a comfortable space where visitors feel like they are part of the family.
Because they produce some of the finest California wines, you would think that Jim and Corey have been in the wine business all their lives. But that’s not the case. Jim was an electrical engineer before becoming a winemaker and Corey, who manages the tasting room, was a schoolteacher. It wasn’t until 2004 when they purchased their 76-acre property in Manton – where they planned to “retire” and take up winemaking as a hobby – when their favorite pastime turned into a full time job. In 2007 the couple invested their savings and planted a vineyard, and in 2009 Cedar Crest became a federally bonded winery.
With its mountain climate, rich volcanic soils and plenty of clean water Manton Valley is a perfect region for growing wine grapes. This unique environment coupled with specific cultivation and winemaking practices give Cedar Crest wines a distinct, unforgettable flavor. To ensure the highest-quality product, Jim and his son Mark handcraft wines in small lots, usually less than 200 cases.
Jim and Corey’s passion for creating an exceptional product shows through in wines that easily rival those of Napa County: red varietals including Syrah, Petite Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are smooth, rich and full bodied. White varietals of Viognier and Chardonnay, and blends of the two, are fragrant, light and crisp with notes of fresh fruit. Several of these wines have won medals at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
But Jim and Corey offer visitors more than award-winning wines. They give them a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and experience a relaxing day of wine tasting in the mountains. While at Cedar Crest, wine lovers are free to let down their hair, put up their feet and enjoy sweeping views of the vineyard and surrounding forest or, if they’re in a gaming mood, play Bocce Ball under the shade of the cedars. After an afternoon of tasting, guests can picnic on the vast green lawns or barbeque burgers and sausages with all the fixings provided by the winery at a nominal price.
